Checking RAID10 As mentioned before, this RAID box can use Mac's disk utilty to create software raid as well. This time, checked the performance of both hardware and software based raid.
used wd blue 1tb x4. the speed of raid0 by both software and firmware was over 600MB/s high performance. it is a good result for 4 disk raid 0. when i use raid10, the speed was more than 300MB/s, and this is the enough speedy for the raid with data redundancy. raid 10 can only be built by hardware raid. the reason why software raid is as speedy as hardware raid is because the machine used here is powerful. (mac mini core i7 2.5ghz)
the advantage of raid case is that you can buy and use cheaper hdds. when u you use some tb hard drives, it is easily record a lot of high vision tv programs.
we may expect that using 4 ssds can achieve extremely high speed transer. so we tested.
install 4 ssds into rsm4t, and set raid0. the speed was not much different between 2 ssds, 3 ssds and 4 ssds. Now tried mbp retina. daisy chain rsm4t with 2 ssds and rsm2t with 2 ssds, and set to raid0. the speed got to 700mb/s. Now connect rs-m4t with 2 ssds to a thunderbolt port and set to raid0, and connect rsm2t with 2 ssds to another thundrebolt port and also set raid0. Then used disk utility to set those 2 volumers to raid 0. This time the speed was more than 1GB/s.
however, under raid0, one of the hdds or ssds is broken, then whole data is lost. You should have data back up somewhere.
