We found that some editions of Western Digital hard drives have a compatibility issue with our RAID Systems. At the present moment, Western Digital manufactures both "Desktop" and "RAID" (or also called "Enterprise") hard drive editions. The difference between the two types of hard drives is that one is designed to work specifically in a desktop computer, and the other is made for a RAID controller. If you would like to use a Western Digital hard drive in our RAID Systems, it is highly recommended to use their "RAID" edition. If a "Desktop" edition is installed into our RAID system, the hard drive may not work properly due to its features. Please refer to Western Digital's web site for more information under -
"What is the difference between Desktop edition and RAID (Enterprise) edition hard drives?"Reference: Western Digital Web siteIn addition, Samsung's hard drive has the same issue. For example, Samsung Spinpoint F4 HD204UI 2TB is considered as a "non- RAID" class hard drive, and should not be used for RAID-related applications. Samsung's hard drive also have two editions, similar to Western Digital: RAID and non-RAID. Please refer to
Fedora Forum for more information.
Except for those specified hard drives, all other hard drives (i.e. Hitachi, Seagate and Western Digital) may be used for DataTale's RAID Systems.
